Ice Cream? What is it about it? The richness? The creaminess? The sweetness? The texture of smooth cream as it melts on your tongue? The cool way it soothes as it goes down your throat? The feeling of contentment as the milk fats covers your stomach lining? And we haven't even covered the individuality of flavours and complex combinations of toppings.
One person may swear by sorbets while another will choke at the mere mention of chocolate. So many possible flavours, textures and combinations to suit everyones' multitude of tastes.
I have always been a flavour puritan. The best way to really appreciate the intense burst of vim from ice cream is not to taint it with the frivolities of fudge, nuts or sprinkles.
A case for toppings was made today. One may enjoy the distinct flavours of ice-cream right out of a tub but usually only at ice-cream parlors can one savor ice-cream accentuated with all the different types of coulis, wafers and caramels. Here toppings play an important role in contrasting and complementing the flavors of the original ice-cream, adding an additional dimension of taste and texture. It's very similar to the way ice-cream plays the advocate to brownies and crumbles.
At the end of it all it boils down to personal taste and preference. Today I appreciate the way a chewy chocolate malt ball lengthens the time it takes one to savor a simple Chocolate Malt ice-cream or how fluffy whipped cream allows ice-cream to remain frozen for a slightly longer period of time. Or how a chocolate-covered wafer melts in between your fingers before it could be fully relished.

But my preference for ice-cream unencumbered by toppings refuses to dissipate. The simple delight for a plain scoop (but more likely two scoops) remains. Not everyone feels the same way I do and they don't have to. Cos there might come a day when we'll all feel differently and it all won't matter anymore. Rainbow sprinkles or no rainbow sprinkles.
