Okay this started out as quite a lengthy post in my mind but I have now forgotten all my content. Damn!
I'm currently working with a graphic design company and one of them remarked: "... that the explaination for the concept can come later. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow to get those creative juices coming... "
Maybe that has something to do with following your intution. I don't disagree. ntuition can be a very powerful form of muse for creativity. But of course, once you have to explain and put words behind your design, that it all comes out as fluff and B.S.
So at most times designing to suit a particular function or to acheive a particular sentiment or feeling would result in a more purposeful and objective oriented design.
Of course that just makes things way way harder for yourself.
