A week ago I was with my buddy when I happened to bump into 2 of my uni mates at a marina coffeeshop. The 2 ladies were looking really great and they were having one of those "fun" saturdays - blading, dinner, and fireworks (NDP rehearsal). They're no longer in the technical line but from the sound of it they're doing really great career-wise. In fact one of 'em was flying off to Hong Kong the next day.
Later on during the week, I mentioned to the same buddy how someone we know back in JC was now an Asst Director in some Law Bureau in the govt. That was when he lost it.
He was about to leave his current employer because they did not appreciate his efforts and he's been stagnant there to long without and prospects of promotion. He has been cool about it until that night when he started cursing his bosses. I have no doubt he is a diligent and intelligent worker but it seems management is no longer appreciates people who conscientiously puts up with the daily skull-duggery. He realized he took the job far too seriously back then thinking that somewhere down the line his hard work will be appreciated.
There are some of us who think that are 2 ways to get promoted: To be spectacular or to do the time. I wish that were true but we're too old to be under such illusions. You either have to be spectacular or be seen to be spectacular.
We had a good catharsis cursing and making fun of our superiors (or rather his). Unfortunately now he can't turn off his vulgarity switch and every other moment, an uncharacteristic "f**k" slips out of his mouth. This is SO secondary school. I have to be careful who I teach this "f**k 'em, f**k 'em all" attitude to. I can't be seen to be corrupting 30 year old virgins.
