Facebook or Google Plus?
I now have signed up with 2 social media sites. One in Facebook. One in Google+. (Let's leave the one I have with LinkedIn out of this, that fella never harmed anyone. At least that I know of). I have never been really fond of Social Media or Facebook in the first place but when Google+ happened I decided to give it a go. It has been a fun experiment especially since Google+ continues to throw in new features every few weeks.
So why did I sign up with Facebook? Well all my relatives live in Malaysia and it seems Facebook has caught on in a big way down there (and every else in the world, I guess). This is a channel for me to remain somewhat connected to my kin who I see only 2 to 3 times a year and it works wonderfully for that.
To top it all off, Brian Solis makes a great point here wrt to the fallacy of information overload. Why do we use Facebook? Why do I use Google+?. I discover that the firehose that is twitter makes it impossible for me to curate what I need to know as well as what I need to say. And the things I see people say publicly on twitter, especially kids, unnerve me. Maybe it's just my generation.
But what about Google+? "Nobody is using it" people say. What would be the point of a social network if no one is on it. My feeling it's still early days yet and it has not got the traction in the community yet.
So what is the point of this discussion? It is my feeling that I am beginning to understand the lure of Social Media. Much like blogging it gives us a voice but at the same time we are able to limit that conversation with those we are comfortable with. Conversation. This is where facebook excels. It gives an instant avenue for feedback and engagement through its comment and tagging system. The healthy discussions that belonged in the comment sections of blog posts is now vying for your attention in your news feed.
So do we still need blogs? Blogs seemed to have evolved into more of publishing platform and facebook and Google+ drives the engagement. Also blogs are more of a public platform.
We can use all these tools for many things but in the end is why does one write and post, be it on facebook or on a blog or Google+. Once one figures out the why, then one can figure out what to say.
I was in the camp of those who refused to have facebook and twitter. People used to exist fine before Facebook and blogs, they say. Why must I jump on the bandwagon, they say. But I wasn't in that camp because I'm being an old fuddy-duddy (Does that still exist? Does using it makes me one?) but rather to wait and see how things develop. I was hoping to be one of those people who did join Social Media because everyone was on it. I was hoping that I could display some resemblence of wisdom and good judgement by saying I joined these sites caused it value adds to my existence.
And this is where I am. Figuring out the value-add of my existence.
